Embed a crossword puzzle on your own website

Make a crossword, copy one short piece of code, paste it into your page. Your visitors solve the puzzle right there: on the phone, on the laptop, or printed with an answer key. It is free and needs no account.

Make a crossword to embed

This is what it looks like

The puzzle below is embedded the same way you would embed yours. Try it: click a square and type.

The code for this example

Two parts: the frame with the puzzle, and a normal link below it. The link tells readers where the puzzle was made, so please keep it.

<iframe src="https://www.crosswordcreator.org/embed/en-back-to-school/" title="Back to School crossword puzzle" width="100%" height="720" style="border:0;max-width:900px" loading="lazy"></iframe>
<p><a href="https://www.crosswordcreator.org/">Crossword made with crosswordcreator.org</a></p>

Embed your own in three steps

  1. Make your crossword

    Type your words and clues in the maker, or start from one of the ready-made puzzles.

  2. Press Share, then Create link

    The puzzle is saved without an account. Below the link you find the section “Embed on your website”.

  3. Copy the code and paste it into your page

    In the HTML view of your editor, in a “Custom HTML” block, or in the code field of your learning platform.

Who embeds crosswords

  • Teachers

    Vocabulary, a unit test warm-up or a cover lesson: put the puzzle on the class page and students solve it on their own devices.

  • Blogs and magazines

    A puzzle at the end of an article keeps readers on the page. Topics like animals, space, holidays or history fit most blogs.

  • Clubs, parishes and schools

    A crossword about your village, your club or your church year, on the newsletter page or the website of the association.

Where it works

WordPress
Add a “Custom HTML” block and paste the code.
Google Sites
Choose Insert, then Embed, then “Embed code”, and paste it.
Moodle
Open the HTML view (the <> button) of a Page or a Label and paste the code. If your site removes frames, ask the administrator, or use the share link instead.
Google Classroom
Classroom posts do not show embedded frames. Attach the share link to the assignment; students open the puzzle with one tap.
Wix, Squarespace and others
Use the “Embed HTML” element or the code block and paste the code.

Size

The code uses the full width of the column and a height of 720 pixels. On wide pages the clues sit next to the grid; on narrow ones they sit below it. Change the number after height= if you need more or less room.

Optional: height that fits

If your page allows scripts, this snippet sets the frame to exactly the height of the puzzle. Paste it once anywhere on the page.

<script>
addEventListener('message', function (e) {
  if (e.origin !== 'https://www.crosswordcreator.org' || !e.data || !e.data.ccEmbedHeight) return;
  document.querySelectorAll('iframe').forEach(function (f) {
    if (f.contentWindow === e.source) f.style.height = e.data.ccEmbedHeight + 'px';
  });
});
</script>

Questions

Is embedding free?

Yes. Making the crossword, embedding it and solving it are free, without an account and without ads.

Do I need to keep the link below the puzzle?

Please do. It is how readers find out where the puzzle comes from, and it is the only thing we ask in return.

Can I change the puzzle after embedding it?

Yes. Open your edit link, change the words and press Update link. The embedded puzzle changes, the code stays the same.

Can students see the answers?

The answers are part of the frame’s code, so a technically curious student could find them. That is fine for practice and homework, not for exams.

Does the puzzle track my visitors?

No. The embedded view uses no cookies and no analytics, and it loads nothing from other companies.

Which language does the puzzle use?

The language of the crossword. A German puzzle shows German buttons, a Spanish one Spanish, and so on.

Can visitors print it?

Yes. The Print menu in the frame prints only the puzzle, optionally with an answer key on page two.
