History crosswords for class and trivia
History crosswords turn names, places and events into a puzzle. American Symbols is easy and asks about the Statue of Liberty, the torch, the bell, the dollar, the pledge and the motto. The American Revolution is medium and asks about minutemen, Lexington, Concord, Yorktown, Saratoga and Valley Forge. US Presidents is medium as well, from Adams and Jefferson to Lincoln, Kennedy and Obama.
Ancient Egypt is hard, with pharaoh, pyramid, sphinx, papyrus, hieroglyph, Cleopatra and Tutankhamun. The clues give a role, a place, a date or a short description, so the puzzles work as a review before a test or as a trivia game for history fans.
To make your own, use the key terms of a chapter and type each word with its clue. The grid builds itself. Print it with the answer key, or share a link so that a class or a trivia group can solve it on phones, tablets or computers. A puzzle of ten to fifteen answers from one period or one country works best, because the clues then reinforce each other.
Tips for your own puzzle
- Use dates in clues: “Sailed west in 1492 and reached the Caribbean” leads to COLUMBUS.
- Pick one period: PYRAMID, PHARAOH, NILE and SCRIBE make a compact set for ancient Egypt.
- Ask for the person behind the event: “Wrote the Declaration of Independence” leads to JEFFERSON.
