About these science crosswords
The science crosswords take you into the lab and beyond. Forces and Machines is easy and made for kids, with magnet, friction, energy, lever, pulley, ramp and battery. In the Science Lab is medium and covers equipment such as the beaker, microscope, flask and pipette, plus hypothesis, density, catalyst and reaction.
Famous Scientists is also medium, with Newton, Einstein, Darwin, Curie and Galileo. Elements of the Periodic Table is hard, from helium and neon to tungsten and uranium. The clues explain what each item does or means, so the puzzles work as a review before a test, as a warm-up at the start of a unit, or as an activity for a substitute teacher.
Solve them online or print them with the answer key. Students can work alone or in pairs, and the answers often lead to good questions, such as why a scientist needs a hypothesis. For your own puzzle, use the vocabulary of the unit you are teaching, such as the cell or energy.
Tips for your own puzzle
- Use the scientific method as a set: HYPOTHESIS, EXPERIMENT, DATA and RESULT follow one another in a real project.
- Add the states of matter: SOLID, LIQUID and GAS are short, and PLASMA is a fourth state that many students find surprising.
- Keep the definitions exact: for ATOM write “Smallest unit of an element,” not “tiny particle.”
