About these fairy tale crosswords
The fairy tale crosswords lead from story time to the myths of ancient Greece. Once Upon a Time is easy and asks about characters, objects and places from classic stories such as Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Goldilocks and Pinocchio, with prince, dragon, dwarf, giant, slipper and castle.
Andersen and Grimm is medium and visits Hansel and Gretel, Thumbelina, the little mermaid, the ugly duckling and the nightingale. Greek Myths is hard and asks about Hephaestus, Persephone, Prometheus, Icarus, Orpheus, Pandora, the Minotaur and the labyrinth, for older students and adults.
The clues retell a small part of each story, so children who have heard the tales will find the answers quickly, and others will pick up the plot as they solve. That makes the puzzles a fit for story time in the library, a literature unit or a family evening with a book. Solve them online or print them with the answer key. To make your own, use the characters of a story your class just read.
Tips for your own puzzle
- Pick a story: for Cinderella use SLIPPER, PUMPKIN, PRINCE, BALL and MIDNIGHT.
- Use the villains: WOLF, WITCH and DRAGON are short, well known and cross easily.
- Write clues as story questions: “What did the third little pig use to build his house?” leads to BRICKS.
