About these nature crosswords

The nature crosswords cover trees, plants and the places they grow. Trees and Plants is easy and asks for oak, maple, pine, birch, willow, cedar, palm, fern, moss, cactus, root, leaf, seed, bark, acorn and bamboo. The clues describe what a tree looks like, where a plant grows or what a part does.

Habitats and Ecosystems is medium and asks about biome, tundra, wetland, prairie, savanna, rainforest, mangrove, taiga, canopy, predator, prey and symbiosis. Botany Terms is hard and covers chlorophyll, stomata, xylem, phloem, pistil, stamen, cotyledon, germination and pollination.

That makes them a good fit for a nature lesson, a science unit on plants and ecosystems, a scout trip or a slow afternoon in the garden. Solve them online on a phone or tablet, or print them with the answer key to take on a hike. For your own puzzle, use the trees of your own street, park or region.

Tips for your own puzzle

  • Group trees by type: OAK, MAPLE and BIRCH lose their leaves in the fall, while PINE and CEDAR stay green.
  • Include plant parts: ROOT, STEM, LEAF and SEED are short and help students review how a plant works.
  • Add a plant that surprises: a CACTUS stores water in its stem, and BAMBOO is a grass, not a tree.
