About these music crosswords
The music crosswords go from the instrument shelf to the concert hall. Make Some Music is easy and is about instruments from the orchestra, the band or the music classroom: piano, guitar, violin, cello, harp, flute, clarinet, oboe, trumpet, trombone, tuba, saxophone, banjo and ukulele.
Music Terms is medium and covers tempo, rhythm, melody, harmony, chord, octave, staccato, crescendo, soprano, conductor and allegro. Classical Composers is hard and asks about Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Chopin, Schubert, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi and Stravinsky. The composer puzzle is a challenge for older students and adult music lovers.
The instrument clues tell you how an instrument is played or which family it belongs to, without needing to read music. That suits a music teacher who wants a quick review, or band students. Solve the puzzles online or print them with the answer key. For your own, try one family at a time, such as strings, brass or percussion.
Tips for your own puzzle
- Use the four families: STRINGS with VIOLIN and CELLO, WOODWIND with FLUTE and OBOE, BRASS with TUBA, and PERCUSSION with DRUMS.
- Include the string quartet: VIOLIN, VIOLA and CELLO are all bowed, and the violin is the smallest of the three.
- Add composers: MOZART, BACH and BEETHOVEN are short enough to cross easily and are known by most students.
