About these food crosswords

The food crosswords offer something for every cook and every eater. Good Morning Breakfast is easy and asks about pancakes, waffles, cereal, oatmeal, bagels and syrup. Fruits and Veggies is easy as well and made for kids, with apples, bananas, carrots, broccoli and spinach. Their clues describe how a food looks, tastes or grows.

Herbs and Spices is medium, with basil, oregano, cinnamon, saffron, paprika, turmeric and cumin. Culinary Terms is hard and is written for home cooks and culinary students: saute, julienne, braise, blanch, deglaze, roux, mirepoix, ganache and umami.

The easy puzzles suit children in early elementary school, families who like a puzzle with breakfast, and teachers planning a unit on healthy eating. You can solve them online on a phone, tablet or computer, or print them with the answer key. For a menu of your own, try a crossword with the dishes of a family recipe book or a holiday dinner.

Tips for your own puzzle

  • Use food families: BROCCOLI, SPINACH and LETTUCE are leafy or green, while CARROT and BEET grow underground.
  • Mix short and long answers: PEAR, PEA and FIG fit around longer words such as PANCAKE or BLUEBERRY.
  • Write clues about taste or texture: “Sour yellow fruit for lemonade” for LEMON is short and unambiguous.
