About these weather crosswords
The weather crosswords cover everything that happens in the sky. What a Weather! is easy and made for kids, with rain, snow, wind, clouds, thunder, lightning, fog, hail and tornadoes. The words are short and familiar, and the clues describe the weather in plain language, for instance that a rainbow appears when the sun shines through raindrops.
Extreme Weather and Seasons is medium and asks about blizzards, drought, sandstorms, typhoons, cyclones, the equinox and the solstice. The Science of Weather is hard and meant for older students and adults. It asks about cumulonimbus, cirrus, barometer, anemometer, jetstream, monsoon and troposphere.
What a Weather! suits grades one through four or a quiet game on a day when the weather keeps everyone inside. The medium and hard puzzles work as a review in a geography or earth science class. Solve them online on a phone or tablet, or print them with the answer key. You can also make a puzzle for local weather, such as hurricanes on the Gulf Coast.
Tips for your own puzzle
- Choose one season per puzzle: WINTER can pair with SNOW, FROST, SLEET and BLIZZARD.
- Use measuring words for older solvers: THERMOMETER shows temperature, BAROMETER shows air pressure, and ANEMOMETER measures wind speed.
- Ask for cause and effect in a clue: “Bright flash in a storm, seen before the thunder” leads to LIGHTNING.
