About these geography crosswords
The geography crosswords range from easy to hard. American Landmarks is easy, with Yosemite, Niagara, Alcatraz, the Everglades and Mount Rushmore. Around the World and State Capitals are medium: countries such as France, Brazil, Japan, Egypt and Kenya, and capitals from Austin and Denver to Juneau and Honolulu. World Capitals is hard and runs from Canberra and Ottawa to Reykjavik and Astana.
The clues use famous facts: a river, a monument, a neighboring country or a nearby ocean. That makes the puzzles useful as a review in a social studies class, as a warm-up before a geography bee, or as a game for a family road trip.
Solve them online or print them with the answer key. Older students and trivia fans may finish quickly, while younger ones can work in pairs and look at a map for help. To make your own, use the countries of one continent, the rivers of one country or the cities of your own state.
Tips for your own puzzle
- Pick a region: NORWAY, SWEDEN, FINLAND and DENMARK are a good Nordic set that crosses easily.
- Use capitals and states together: the capital of California is SACRAMENTO, and the capital of Texas is AUSTIN.
- Add landmarks: NILE, ALPS, ANDES and SAHARA are short, well known and easy to clue.
